As someone who is deaf, I’ve experienced many different language services throughout my life. Recently, I’ve been experimenting with some new trends and techniques to enhance my communication. Here, I want to share three of these trends and how they have improved my interactions.

1. Enhancing Video Relay Services (VRS) with Context

Video Relay Services (VRS) have been a cornerstone of communication for many deaf individuals.

VRS is similar to Video Remote Interpreting (VRI), but it’s specifically designed for phone calls rather than in-person interactions. Traditionally, when using VRS, the interpreter comes onto the screen without any prior context about the call, and begins translating the call for the deaf individual. So if I need to talk to a mechanic, or a relative, I start signing, and the interpreter starts talking as soon as the call starts.

This is a very helpful service! But the lack of context can sometimes lead to a less smooth interaction, as the interpreter must quickly adapt and understand the conversation’s direction.

For the past two months, I’ve started providing the interpreter with some context before the call begins.

For instance, if I’m calling the bank to wire money or contacting a repair service to fix my air conditioning, I inform the interpreter about who I’m calling and the purpose of the call. This small change has made a substantial difference.

By knowing the goal of the call upfront, the interpreter can align more closely with my intentions and needs. They are better prepared to handle the conversation, leading to fewer misunderstandings and a more seamless interaction. It’s a simple yet effective way to enhance the quality of VRS.

2. Slower and More Deliberate Signing

As someone who uses American Sign Language (ASL) daily, I’ve recently started signing more slowly and deliberately. This change stems from my realization that clear and precise communication is crucial for effective interpretation.

When I sign slowly, it allows the interpreter to capture my message more accurately, leading to better communication overall.

I’ve also noticed that when I sign slowly, the people working with me feel like I’m “on,” meaning my communication is clear and purposeful. But, when I rush through my signing, it can create a sense of disconnect, making it harder for others to understand me.

This experience has been eye-opening. It made me realize that, as deaf individuals, we need to be more mindful of our signing clarity. By taking the time to articulate my signs clearly, I’ve improved my interactions significantly.

3. Pre-Booking Recurring Appointments

One of the challenges in using interpreting services is the need to constantly book appointments for recurring meetings or sessions. Traditionally, interpreters show up for an appointment, and if the meeting needs to be scheduled again, the process of finding and booking the same interpreter can be cumbersome.

To address this, I’ve implemented a new approach over the past two months. Now, when an interpreter arrives for an appointment, we immediately discuss and pre-book the next few sessions.

This proactive scheduling has alleviated much of the burden associated with finding and booking interpreters for recurring appointments.

If you are an interpreter, simply ask, “Should we go ahead and book for the next few appointments?” right at the end of the current session can make a world of difference to those you serve. It’s a small, but meaningful adjustment.

As we continue to explore and implement new trends in language services, I believe in embracing innovation while keeping the needs of both interpreters and consumers at the forefront.
