Internship Program

Join our Internship Program and develop real-world interpreting skills guided by experienced professionals.

Program Overview

What is the Hands Up Internship Program?

The Hands Up Internship Program is designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world interpreting. Rooted in our mission of creating connection through language, the program empowers emerging interpreters with practical experience, ethical guidance, and meaningful mentorship.

Interns progress through a thoughtfully structured, three-phase journey—from initial observation to supported independence, and finally, professional-level interpreting. Each phase builds core competencies while reinforcing ethical decision-making and effective communication.

Whether you’re just beginning or preparing to launch your interpreting career, our program offers the support, exposure, and community you need to grow with confidence and integrity.

Phase 1: Shadowing

Interns begin by observing seasoned interpreters in action, focusing on team dynamics, decision-making, and ethical practice in real-world settings.

As appropriate, interns will be offered interpreting opportunities within these environments to begin applying skills under direct mentor observation and feedback.

Phase 2: Supported Independence

Interns begin actively interpreting in lower-risk settings with mentor feedback, guided debriefs, and structured opportunities for skill application.

Mentorship remains close, offering guidance while interns build confidence and consistency in their work. Some paid and low-risk solo work available.

Phase 3: Launching Pad

Interns interpret independently in a variety of settings, demonstrating professional decision-making, ethical reasoning, and adaptability.

This final phase prepares interns for certification and professional practice through reflective evaluation and continued mentor support as needed. Paid work available.
