How to Boost Inclusion In The Workplace

Many organizations prioritize  Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives to create a workplace that embraces all employees, regardless of their background.

However, the execution of these initiatives often overlooks a crucial aspect—accommodating employees with disabilities. Particularly in terms of language accessibility.

As someone who has navigated both supportive and challenging work environments as a deaf professional, I have witnessed firsthand the power of inclusive practices.

Here’s a deeper look into how corporations can effectively implement interpreting and translation services as part of their DEI strategies to support a truly multicultural and inclusive workforce.

A Tale of Two Workplaces

Throughout my career, I’ve experienced a spectrum of workplace environments in terms of accessibility.

I’ve had three jobs where I had full access to ASL (American Sign Language) interpreters and found the workplaces to be exceptionally deaf-friendly. But, I’ve also had jobs where I was the only deaf person and had no interpreter help. Navigating these spaces was significantly harder.

Luckily, making a workplace accessible doesn’t always require interpreters.

At one of my more inclusive jobs, the employer asked if I would be interested in teaching an ASL class. Though I’m not a professional instructor, we found someone who could assist. For $50 a week, an ASL teacher came in, taught the language to my colleagues, and my colleagues were able to practice with me!

Talk about two birds with one stone! This improved workplace communication and made me feel more included.

The best part?

The company didn’t have to pay for a professional interpreter for forty hours a week!

Key Ways To Use Language Services To Increase Inclusivity

Language services, including interpreting and document translation, play a crucial role in creating inclusive workplaces. These services enable employees who are deaf, hard of hearing, or non-native English speakers to fully participate in all aspects of their work.

Here are some practical ways to implement these services:

  1. On-Site Interpreters: Provide on-site ASL interpreters for meetings, training sessions, and company-wide events. This ensures that deaf employees can engage fully without missing critical information.
  2. Video Remote Interpreting (VRI): For remote workers or those who travel frequently, VRI can be a valuable tool. It provides real-time interpreting services through video calls, making communication seamless regardless of location.
  3. Document Translation: Ensure all important documents, including training materials, HR policies, and safety procedures, are available in multiple languages. This supports non-native English speakers and ensures they understand their roles and responsibilities.
  4. Captioning Services: For video content, such as training videos or company announcements, provide captioning services. This ensures that employees who are deaf or hard of hearing can access and understand the information.

Beyond Interpreters

Being inclusive of the disabled goes beyond providing language services. There are numerous disabilities out there that need accommodations. And each of these accommodations should be personalized to the needs of the person.

Unfortunately, a common scenario in many workplaces is hiring someone for a job and then realizing they need additional accommodations.

Often, the responsibility of figuring out these accommodations is unfairly placed on the employee with the disability.

This can be overwhelming and counterproductive. What should you do instead?

When working with a disabled employee, you should ask them how they would prefer to be included and accommodated.

This way, employers proactively understand their needs and preferences, and can find ways to accommodate that truly improve the inclusion of the individual. The more we work together, the more inclusive our work environment can become.

Remember, if everyone can’t participate in an activity or meeting, it’s not truly inclusive!

Need language services for your office?

JOB TITLE: Interpreter Recruiter & Liaison

COMPANY: Hands Up Communications
LOCATION: Remote
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Full-time, hourly
PAY: [$XX–$XX per hour]

ABOUT US

Hands Up Communications provides professional interpretation services in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken languages across medical, legal, educational, business, and community settings. Our interpreters make communication possible when it matters most, and we’re committed to finding great interpreters and taking care of them once they join us.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re seeking an experienced Interpreter Recruiter & Liaison to grow and support our interpreter network across all languages, including ASL, high-demand spoken languages like Spanish, Mandarin, and Arabic, and rare languages of lesser diffusion. You’ll bring new interpreters on board and serve as the main point of contact for our existing interpreters, making sure they feel supported, informed, and valued.

This is not a general recruiting or HR role. You’ll need a deep, practical understanding of the language services industry, including how interpreters are trained, credentialed, and assessed, and what interpreters need to do their best work.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Recruiting

  • Source ASL and spoken-language interpreter candidates through job boards, professional associations, interpreter training programs, universities, community organizations, and referrals.
  • Build relationships within the Deaf community and with ASL interpreter networks, including recruiting Certified Deaf Interpreters (CDIs).
  • Develop creative sourcing strategies for rare and hard-to-fill languages, including outreach to diaspora communities and language-specific networks.
  • Screen candidates for language proficiency, interpreting skills, professional conduct, and knowledge of interpreting ethics and standards of practice.
  • Evaluate and verify credentials, including RID certifications (NIC, CDI), BEI, state ASL interpreter licensure, CCHI, NBCMI, court certifications, ATA, and equivalent international credentials.
  • Coordinate language proficiency and interpreting skills assessments.
  • Manage the full recruitment lifecycle, from outreach and interviews through offers, contracting, and onboarding.
  • Maintain an organized candidate pipeline, anticipating language demand and building a bench of qualified interpreters ahead of need.

Interpreter Liaison and Support

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for current interpreters, answering questions and resolving concerns related to assignments, scheduling, pay, policies, and client interactions.
  • Conduct regular check-ins with interpreters to gather feedback, address issues early, and strengthen retention.
  • Act as a bridge between interpreters and internal teams (scheduling, operations, billing, quality assurance), advocating for interpreter needs while supporting company goals.
  • Help resolve concerns between interpreters and clients professionally and fairly.
  • Track credential renewals, continuing education requirements (such as RID CEUs), and compliance documents to keep interpreters current and assignment-ready.
  • Share updates on policies, procedures, and opportunities through clear, accessible communication, including ASL where appropriate.
  • Support professional development by connecting interpreters with training, workshops, mentoring, and resources, including resources on self-care and vicarious trauma.
  • Help build a sense of community among remote and independent interpreters through recognition efforts, virtual meetups, and team communications.
  • Conduct exit interviews and use feedback to identify trends and recommend improvements to retention and interpreter experience.

General

  • Partner with scheduling, operations, and quality assurance teams to understand coverage gaps and client requirements.
  • Represent Hands Up Communications at virtual and in-person industry events, conferences, and interpreter association meetings.
  • Keep up to date on industry trends, pay standards, and certification requirements across ASL and spoken-language specializations.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the language services industry, either as a working interpreter or in a role such as interpreter recruitment, vendor management, language access coordination, or interpreter operations.
  • In-depth knowledge of the interpreting profession, including modes of interpreting (consecutive, simultaneous, sight translation), delivery methods (on-site, OPI, VRI, VRS), specializations (medical, legal, educational, conference, community), and professional codes of ethics such as the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Familiarity with ASL and spoken-language certifications, assessments, and training requirements.
  • Ability to assess interpreter qualifications and recognize red flags during screening.
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills, with the ability to handle sensitive conversations with empathy and professionalism.
  • Sensitivity to diverse cultural backgrounds and Deaf culture.
  • Excellent organization and ability to manage a high volume of candidates and interpreter relationships at once.
  • Comfort working remotely with applicant tracking systems, video platforms, databases, and standard office software.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous work as a certified or qualified interpreter (ASL or spoken language).
  • Fluency in ASL and/or one or more spoken languages in addition to English.
  • An established network within the interpreter community and/or the Deaf community.
  • Experience recruiting for languages of lesser diffusion.
  • Experience in interpreter retention, community management, or workforce support.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Health insurance
  • Paid time off (PTO)
  • 401(k)
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Flexible schedule

HOW TO APPLY

Please send your resume and a brief cover letter describing your experience in the language industry to [email address or application link]. In your cover letter, tell us about a time you recruited for a hard-to-fill language or helped an interpreter work through a challenge.

EEO STATEMENT

Hands Up Communications is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, and Deaf and hard of hearing candidates are encouraged to apply.
